Mission and Activities of the Enoch Crosby Chapter NSDAR

Our chapter is an active group of women dedicated to helping our community and honoring our ancestors.  We do this through historic preservation, promotion of education, and patriotic endeavor.  Below are just some of the amazing projects we have completed or are actively working on. Feel free to visit our Facebook and our Instagram pages for current activities.

Our chapter was founded on April 8, 1926, in Carmel, Putnam County, New York.  It currently consists of 84 members and 7 associate members.  Our chapter typically meets one Saturday a month where we discuss the upcoming and ongoing community projects, and we host amazing speakers.

Preservation of Patriot Gravestones

Each year more of the gravestones of Revolutionary War veterans buried in Putnam County become unreadable. In an effort to preserve these stones for future generations of Americans, the Enoch Crosby Chapter NSDAR has completed a project to locate and digitally photograph as many of these gravesites as possible.

Our chapter has created a book that contains color photographs of the gravestones of proven and suspected Revolutionary War patriots buried in Putnam County, New York.

In 2004, the chapter was proud to place a marker on the memorial to Enoch Crosby. The original gravestone was destroyed by people removing pieces of the gravestone as souvenirs. Ferdinand Hopkins, his grandnephew, had this monument made and placed at the grave of Enoch Crosby in 1914.  A DAR grave marker was placed at the grave by the Enoch Crosby Chapter NSDAR on May 2, 2004, at the Gilead Burying Ground, Carmel, New York.

For the NSDAR Day of Service, our chapter members have cleaned the tombstones at the Patterson Baptist Church Cemetery in Patterson, New York.

Supporting Veterans and Active Duty Military

We support veterans by partnering with Warrior Expeditions, the  PFC Joseph Dwyer Vet to Vet Program, and by visiting our local veterans hospital and attending Veterans Day ceremonies.

We support active servicemen and women by collecting coupons and sending them to international bases.

We attend local history and patriotic observances in our community and county. This includes marching in local parades and presenting wreaths in honor of military service.  The public is always welcome to participate in our Ribbons of Respect program for their own, beloved veterans.  Each year for Memorial Day, our chapter decorates wreaths with ribbons.  The wreaths are marched in Memorial Day Ceremonies across Putnam and Dutchess Counties by members of the chapter.

Supporting Education

We collect Box Tops for Education to help support the DAR schools.

Members also participate in C.A.R. (Children of the American Revolution) activities and co-sponsor the John Jay Society C.A.R.
Sponsor essay contest on what the American Flag Means to Me in local schools.

Present ROTC medals to eligible local students enrolled in the ROTC cadet program.

Yearly chapter scholarships are available to local high school seniors.  These seniors do not need to be involved with DAR to apply for the scholarship.
